Croatoan
Unlabeled Scene:
Sam and Dean are in the Impala discussing what they are dealing with. Fact is they don’t know what it is, but Sam’s convinced that the guy in the chair is a part of it, and they need to find him and see what he knows. Dean is irritated, but agrees to Sam’s plan.
Ext. Rivergrove Main Street—Day.
The towns an outpost on the way to the mountain lakes surrounding it. It contains the bare minimum—a gas station, small medical clinic, bait store and local diner. The boys park the Impala at the edge of the town, and head along the main drag of the town.
It’s a quiet little place and locals are scattered throughout while vacationers stock up on supplies. Sam slows his pace and mutters ‘he was there’ when he notices a man named Mark Varko. A stoic guy we saw in the teaser (no sides for that one..sorry). The dude’s sitting on the porch of the bait store fiddling with a fly-fishing lure.
On the Porch
Sam and Dean step up the guy and greet him. Vargo asks if he can help him, and smiles until Dean flashes a badge. He introduces himself as Billy Gibbons and his partner Frank Beard, they are US Marshals this time ‘round.
Vargo asks what they want and Dean tells him they are looking for someone, and Sam chips in that it’s a young guy ‘round his 20s.
A memory hits Sam and we see a ‘vision flash’ of a man looking terrified at Dean as he loads the pistol. Sam uses the flash to his advantages and begins describing the guy they are looking for telling Vargo that the man has a thin scar just below his hairline.
Vargo considers the info for a bit, and clearly seeming protective as he questions about what the boy did—exactly. Sam tells him nothing and that they really are looking for someone else but think that this guy can help them find him.
Dean adds that the kids not in trouble, not yet anyways but they just think they can help him. Vargo ain’t buying it, so Dean continues saying that he thinks Vargo knows who he is, and calls the man Master Sergeant.
Vargo is caught off guard by Dean’s statement, then notices that Dean’s simply noticed his old tattoo on his forearm (A USMC Devil Dog with 2 rifles crossed beneath. It’s the master sergeant insignia.
Dean explains that his dad was in the corps, a Lance Corporal. Vargo inquires as to what company and Dean replies that John was Echo, 2nd Battalion, in the First. Vargo nods respectfully.
Sam asks whether the man can help and Vargo’s still reluctant, but tells them that Duane Tanner has a scar similar to that. But also that he knows the kid personally and that he’s a good one, stays out of trouble.
Dean says he’s sure of that, and asks where they can find him. Vargo answers saying that that Duane lives with his family, up Aspen Way.
Ext. Rivergrove—Main Street, Moments Later
Sam and Dean are heading back to the Impala. Dean’s slightly ahead, turns back to look for Sam, but realizes that he’s walking alone. Sam’s stopped a few steps back and is staring at a telephone pole telling Dean that he’s got to come over and see this.
Dean heads over to his brother and sees the word carved into the wooden pole. Its really small and easy to miss. But its obvious the sight of it bothers Sam.
Dean asks what Croatoan means and Sam replies with a reference to the Lost Colony which Dean returns with a blank stare leading Sam to ask the annoyed question if his brother ever paid attention in history class.
Dean replies with a defense sure. And starts listing School House Rock scenarios.
EXT. Rivergrove Main Street—Day.
The Impala comes to a screeching halt outside a cinderblock medical clinic. The doors burst open to reveal Sam helping Mrs. Tanner who looks in pretty bad shape into the waiting room.
Sam calls for a doctor and the nurse we saw in the ‘teaser’ comes from a back room, her name tag reading Pamela. She asks Mrs. Tanner what happened and Sam answers for the wounded lady telling Pamela that Mrs. Tanner has been attacked.
Pamela calls for Dr. Lee and the doctor comes in shocked by the scene. She tells Sam to bring her in, and Sam helps Mrs. Tanner into the exam room. Dr. Lee’s look of shock has faded to one of concern as Dean appears at the door, something heavy and wrapped in a bloody blanket thrown over his shoulder.
It’s a body.
Dean says its Mr. Tanner, and from he can gather. Mr. Tanner did the attacking then got himself shot. Dr. Lee swallows the information and asks who exactly Dean is. He replies that he is a US Marshal and would show the badge just he’s carrying a heavy dead dude.
Dr. Lee apologizes and tells Dean where he can place the body.
Int. Medical Clinic—exam room—later
Mrs. Tanner is seated on an exam table, looking dazed and trying to make sense of the whole thing as Dr. Lee tends to her shoulder asking what exactly does she mean by Jake helped her husband…certainly she doesn’t mean her son Jake.
But Mrs. Tanner nods the affirmative, saying that he beat her and tied her up. Pam looks and gasps that she doesn’t believe it, and Dr. Lee gives her a ‘shut it’ glance before asking Mrs. Tanner why they would act this way, and if the men had a history of chemical dependency.
Mrs.Tanner tells her no, and she has no clue as to why. One minute they were normal, they next they had some kind of Devil in them.
Sam and Dean are watching from the hallway and trade worried looks.
Int. Medical Cline—waiting room
Dean tells Sam they need to talk, so the brothers move to a place better suited for privacy, leaving Dr. Lee and the nurse to take care of Mrs. Tanner. Dean comments on how both guys were completely whacked out. And Sam asks if Dean thinks its possibly multiple demons, or mass possessions.
Dean nods and states that if they were possessed chances are there are more and it could be a friggen’ Shriner convention. Both brothers take that in, and Dean says there is one way to wipe out a town and that is to take it from the inside, but Sam looks doubtful.
Sam says he’s not sure, because they didn’t see any demon smoke with Tanner or any of the other usual signs. Dean shrugs and tells him that something made these guys into a monster informing Sam that if he’d simply taken down the other one, there’d be less to worry about.
Sam’s a bit troubled by Dean’s last statement and apologizes for hesitating but argues that it was a kid. Dean says nope, it was an it.
The boys conversation is interrupted when Dr. Lee emerges, closing the door behind her. She’s deeply upset and stressed. Sam asks how the patient is and Dr. Lee answers that it doesn’t look good, and asks what the hell happened.
Dean replies that they don’t know, and Dr. Lee shoots back that he just killed her next door neighbor. Dean says they didn’t have a choice and she says maybe not but they now need to get the county sheriff and she needs the coroner.
Sam tells her the phones are down and Dr. Lee says she already knows that and that she’d like to believe the boys have a police radio in the car. Sam says they do but it crapped out like everything else.
Dean asks Dr. Lee how far the next town is and she tells him about 40 miles down to the next one—Sidewinder. Dean tells her he’s going to go get help and that his partner will stay here to make sure that she’s safe.
She asks what exactly she needs to be kept safe from but Dean merely replies that he has to get back to her on that.
EXT. Deserted Highway—Day
The Impala’s roaring down the road, Dean sees something ahead and slows down to a stop, a tense look on his face. An abandoned car is sitting in the middle of the road, a family sized sedan. The wheels and windows are shot out and the doors are open, the engine is idling and sputtering.
Dean climbs out of his car and grabs his shotgun for protection. Moving carefully, he approaches the abandoned vehicle. When he peers in he sees blood, and lots of it, including all over the child’s booster seat in the back. However, there is no bodies.
Dean grimaces a bit at the signs of carnage and the flies swarming around, then he notices a blood knife on the ground beside the car, picking it up he notes the blood on the blade, clearly disturbed.
Int. Medical Clinic—Procedure Room—Day
A small room has been turned into a morgue. The body of Mr. Tanner lies on the table, covered midriff with a sheet. Dr. Lee is at a microscope examining a blood sample, and Sam stands behind her watching as she works.
Dr. Lee gives off a ‘huh’ and Sam asks what’s wrong. She explains that Mr. Tanner’s white cell count is really high. His body was fighting off a viral infection like crazy. Sam asks what kind of virus and Dr. Lee says that she cant say for sure. She needs a better microscope.
Sam inquires about whether or not an infection could make someone act like that and Dr. Lee admits that none she’s ever heard of could. Some cause dementia, but never to that level of aggression or creates a weird residue in the blood.
Sam asks what she means and she tells him that if she didn’t know any better she’d say it was sulfur laced through the blood.
Sam knows what that means….
EXT. Highway---Day—Impala
The Impala rounds a bend of road and then slows to a stop again as Dean comes to a bridge across a large gorge a slight distance ahead. Three cars are parked, blockading the road ahead and a half dozen men are standing armed, chatting in hushed tones.
Medical Center---Not sure of exact placement
Mrs. Tanner suddenly grips Dr. Lee’s hand super tight with a single hand and slaps the man with the other. Dr. Lee tumbles backwards and lands hard. Sam turns to Mrs. Tanner, trying to restrain her, but he’s unarmed. She grabs him and hurls him across the room with amazing strength and Sam hits the furnisher with a loud crash.
The crazed woman grabs a scalpel and charges at Sam with it. She right on top of him ready to slice into him when Sam reaches out and grabs a small autoclave catching the woman across the temple. Mrs. Tanner goes down hard, and the surgical tool clinks to the floor.
Dr. Lee rises and looks to Sam and the knocked out woman.
EXT. Just outside of Town—Day.
The Impala’s cruisin’ back down the main drag and Dean survey the town ahead. The streets are completely empty but then Vargo steps out in the middle of the road, his rifle aimed right at Dean.
Dean curses and slams on his brakes, skidding his car to a stop. Vargo moved slowly around to the driver’s door, never losing his aim.
He instructs Dean to put his hands where he can see them and Dean follows the order. Vargo commands him out of the car and Dean tells him to take it easy, but does as the man says. As the door swings open, however, Dean grabs a handgun off the passenger seat and spins coming up and aiming right back at Vargo.
Both men yell for the other to put down the weapons, but instead of firing the men have a rapid fire talk. Dean demands to know if Vargo is one of them and the ex-Marine tells him no and asks the same of Dean who responds in the negative.
Vargo says that Dean could be lying and Dean says so could he so instead of continuing to question Dean raises a hand and tells Vargo that their discussion could go on all day, so its better if they chill out and try not to kill each other.
Both mean keep their guns cocked and ready, the air is tense but they do each lower their aim a bit.
Vargo asks what’s going on with everybody, and Dean says he doesn’t know. Vargo begins to tell Dean about his neighbor Mr. Rogers, which of course Dean has to joke about but Vargo informs him that the dude’s no longer his neighbor because he came at him with a hatchet and Vargo had to put him down. Then as an afterthought, Vargo adds that Mr. Rogers wasn’t the only one and that’s its happening to everybody.
Dean tells him that he’s heading to the Doc’s place because there are some people left. Vargo says no way, he’s getting the hell out of town. But Dean informs him that there is no getting out, the bridge is covered.
Vargo says he doesn’t believe Dean, and Dean says its fine with him if Vargo doesn’t come, but after a little bit of thought, Vargo circles around the Impala and climbs in. Dean closes the driver’s door, and now both men are in the car, and both are pointing their guns at each other.
Dean say its gonna be a relaxing drive.
INT. Medical Clinic—exam room—Night
Dr. Lee is at the microscope, Sam’s hovering nearby. Mrs. Tanner is no where to be seen. A woman named Pam is against the far wall, near hysterical demanding to know what’s going to happen if they all go crazy.
Dr. Lee tells here to stay calm because all they can do is wait, because the Marshal (Dean) is bringing help. Pam says she can’t and that she has to go. Dr. Lee tries to stop her.
Int. Medical Clinic—Exam room—night
Sam’s sitting, holding a bloody compress to his wound. He stares off in a quiet thoughtfulness and Dean realizes that all eyes in the room are on Sam. Dean tells the doctor to check his brother’s wounds but the lady doesn’t move until Dean tells her again.
She grabs a pair of gloves, tugging them on before beginning to examine an infected patient. Vargo asks what she needs those for, she knows what happened. But Dr. Lee makes a close examination of the wound on Sam’s chest and he grimaces as she cleans it out.
Dr. Lee asks Sam if ‘her’ blood actually entered his wound, and Vargo says of course it did, but Dean interrupts saying they don’t know for sure. Duane chimes in that they cant take a chance.
Dean states that nobody is going to shoot his brother, and Duane replies that Sam’s not gonna be Dean’s brother much longer—Dean’s said it himself. Dean remembers, but he’s still not going anywhere and says again that no one is shooting anyone.
Duane throws back that Dean was going to shoot him, and Dean says that if he doesn’t shut up, he actually might. Sam breaks away from the confines of his mind and tells his brother that they are right. He’s infected.
Everyone looks at Sam and he tells someone to give him the gun, he’ll do it himself. Dean tells him to forget and Sam says it’s the right thing to do. Dean says no—repeatedly, then claims that there is time.
Vargo wants to know exactly where he got that idea from and goes on to say that he gets it, Sam being Dean’s brother and all, and that he’s sorry its come to this, but that he feels like he’s got to take care of this.
Dean blocks the man’s way informing Vargo he’s only gonna say this once. And tells the man that if he even looks to move on Sam, he’ll be dead before he even hits the floor.
Sam gets on to Dean for the threat, and Vargo demands to know what they are supposed to do then. Dean reaches into his pocket and pulls out the Impala’s car keys.
He tells Vargo and the others to get the hell out and use the Impala as a getaway. He tells ‘em that there’s an arsenal in the trunk and its evident that Dean’s staying right where he is.
Sam argues and tells Dean to go with them because its his only chance and Dean replies that Sam can’t get rid of him that easily. Vargo tries to convince Dean to come as well, but one look from big brother and Vargo’s only option is to leave Dean behind with Sam.
As Duane, Vargo and Dr. Lee exit, the doctor turns to them and sadly apologizes and thanks the Marshals for everything. Dean tells her they aren’t really Marshals and Dr. Lee mumbles a surprised “Oh.”
It’s a strange way to say goodbye but it does the trick and Dr. Lee close the door. Dean barricades it behind her then turns to look at Sam although little brother won’t meet his eyes.
